Dr. Jim Pettersen taught anatomy at the UW Medical School (now the UW School of Medicine and Public Health) for 35 years, retiring in 1998. His three daughters – all UW-Madison graduates – created the James C. Pettersen Scholarship, PhD Fund to honor and remember their father for his dedication to teaching UW medical students:
“We want to honor our father’s memory by awarding scholarship money to UW medical students who need some extra care because of their circumstances. Giving medical students a bit of financial help is our way of paying it forward - the country needs excellent and dedicated physicians now more than ever and we're grateful to those who choose this career path!”
A gift to this scholarship reduces the financial burden of medical students and honors the legacy of Dr. Pettersen.
Dr. James C. Pettersen
Dr. Jim Pettersen was a beloved teacher of anatomy for almost four decades. Although he died in 2019, the thousands of students he taught vividly remember his commitment to teaching and passion for helping them. The fund will benefit UW medical students from low-income families, who are first-generation students, or those who experience other circumstances that have impacted their educational opportunities.
Please join the Pettersen family in carrying on their inspiring father’s legacy with a gift today. Together, we can foster the next generation of dedicated and compassionate physicians.
